Please also read about reduced echelon form in textbook: only additional thing is leading nonzero elements should equal 1 and the entries above those should also be zero.

Please try problems 1, 3, 7, 11 from 1.2 (5th edition of Lay's book). You can solve them by stopping at echelon matrix as well, without getting reduced echelon form.
