Today we covered arithmetic and geometric sequences, identifying patterns and using that to find formulae for sums of sequences.
I also showed a geometric way to think of the formula for first n natural numbers.
See if you can come up with similar formula for sum of first n odd numbers.

includes hw3 with HINTS for same !
Will do problems 3,4,5,8,9 on wednesday.
Problem 4 uses result of problem 6 and it can also be done using 3 (unique factorization) although that will be silly since we use result of problem 4 to prove that in first place.

Some geometry facts that follow from Euclid's first four postulates.

The homework due monday is separate from the above.
Note that this week's problems were only a demonstration of how in math we try to prove everything starting from first principles.
Starting next week we will study methods of proofs systematically.
The problems will be much simpler.

Wednesday, 8/22/2018
NO CLASS ON MONDAY
Office hours from 9 to 11 am.

For the second question you can assume that the triangles in Picture 1 (on the LHS) are all congruent
and that the gray area in the middle is a square of length c on all sides,
since we proved those two things for the first problem.
