Fluid Dynamics will be meeting as
usual.
The "Fluid" refers to soda and
beer.
The "Dynamics" refers to
the topics of conversation, which is as likely as anything to deal with the Washington
Football Club.
Pizza, including a vegetarian option, and

Faculty (BFF) program
Offered by NC State University on Wednesday, March
15, 2017 - Saturday, March 18, 2017. This all-expenses paid
workshop is designed for diverse graduate students and post-doctoral students
who are seeking a career as a faculty member.
Workshop topics include information regarding what to expect as
a faculty member, a discussion of the wealth of resources available to faculty
for teaching, and expectations of productivity for faculty engaged in research.
During the workshop, participants will spend time with current faculty and
department chairs in their discipline discussing effective strategies to
prepare for an academic career, and the realities of life as a faculty member,
as well as receiving personal tips and feedback.

1. Graduate
seminar on the Sociology of Environmental Health
This is offered this spring for the first time. The course includes a
case study of the lead crisis in Flint, MI, among other things. Class will be

Davenport) National Science Foundation Graduate Research Fellowship Program
(GRFP)
Recognizes and supports outstanding graduate
students in NSF-supported science, technology, engineering, and mathematics
disciplines who are pursuing research-based MasterÕs and doctoral degrees at
accredited United States institutions. The program provides up to three
years of support, including an annual $34,000 stipend, for the graduate
education of individuals who have demonstrated their potential for significant
achievements in science and engineering research. US citizens and permanent
residents who are planning to enter graduate school in an NSF-supported
discipline next fall, or in the first two years of such a graduate program, or
who are returning to graduate school after being out for two or more years, are

Raphael) Student Recruitment Visit for Harvard MD and PhD programs
Nathan Nakatsuka, an MDPhD
student in the Harvard-MIT program currently doing a PhD in computational
population genetics in the Harvard Systems Biology PhD program and Dr. John
Higgins, a Systems Biology professor are planning to visit Howard on October 26
(with a possible extension to Oct. 27) to reach out to students on behalf of
Harvard MD and PhD (and MDPhD) programs. If you have
any students who may be interested in a MD PhD program at Harvard please
contact Nathan Nakatsuka directly at nathan_nakatsuka@hms.harvard.edu
4. Opportunities at various federal
agencies
The National Oceanic and
Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) is pleased to announce the availability of scholarships for
undergraduate students majoring in disciplines related to oceanic and
atmospheric science, research, or technology, and supportive of the purposes
of NOAAÕs programs and mission. Over 100 students are selected each year
for participation in the Ernest F.
Hollings (Hollings) and Educational Partnership Program (EPP) scholarship programs.
These scholarships include support for two years of undergraduate study and
summer internship opportunities at NOAAfacilities
across the country.
