Fluid
dynamics seminar
Seminar usually takes place after colloquium, and
at 4.30 if there is no colloquium.
Abstract: (Neil Hindman)
Fluid Dynamics will be meeting as usual.
This will be provisional.
If student attendance does not improve dramatically
after a few weeks,
financial support for this gathering
will be canceled.
The "Fluid" refers to soda and
beer.
The "Dynamics" refers to the topics
of conversation, which is as likely as anything
to deal with RGIII and the Washington Football Club.
Pizza, including a vegetarian option, and wings
are provided.

TALKS AND
WORKSHOPS OUTSIDE DEPARTMENT --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- 1. (from
Talitha Washington) Statfest 2016 The Committee on
Minorities in Statistics of the American Statistical Association (ASA) is
excited to announce that the 2016 StatFest
conference will be hand on Saturday, September 24, 2016 on the campus of
Howard University in Washington, DC. StatFest is an all-day
conference aimed at encouraging undergraduate students from historically
under-represented groups to consider careers and graduate studies in the
statistical sciences. The conference includes presentations from established
professionals, academic leaders, and current graduate students that will help
attendees understand the opportunities and routes for success in the field. To register, see: http://community.amstat.org/cmis/events/statfest Find us on Facebook at:
https://www.facebook.com/events/1125080907535404/ More details contact Talitha Washington. 2. (from Aziz Yakubu) Blackwell-Tapia Conference The application
deadline has been extended to Sept. 9 to request support to attend the 2016
Blackwell-Tapia Conference and Award Ceremony to be held Oct. 28-29, at the
University of Tennessee Conference Center, Knoxville, TN.
The conference will
include scientific talks, poster presentations, panel discussions, ample
opportunities for discussion and interaction, and the awarding of the
Blackwell-Tapia Prize to Dr. Mariel Vazquez. Participants will come
from all career stages and will represent institutions of all sizes across
the country, including Puerto Rico.
Conference
goals are to recognize and showcase
mathematical excellence by minority researchers among others. Please register by Sept
30, 2016.

1. Research
Education Grant Program
The
Institutional Research Education Program at Howard University, funded by the
Department of Education, has an opportunity for a three-year
grant intended for freshmen and senior-level STEM students
with GPAs between 2.00 - 2.99.
The
programÕs goals are to: provide freshmen with retention strategies to enable
them to complete their education program in STEM fields, for freshmen to
continue in the STEM fields and be assisted with raising
their GPAs to competitive levels, as well as to secure various summer
internships available to STEM majors. Senior students will serve as peer
mentors to the freshmen and students will create four groups for synergistic
research relationships.
All student groups will
meet with research faculty mentors at Howard during the yearlong
course. Dr. Clarence Lee, Professor of Biology, serves as the principal
investigator and Dr. Arlene Maclin as the principal
staff. An online course will be offered in the fall 2016 semester to
students who have already registered for this program. The course will be
offered online using Blackboard and instructions will begin, Saturday,
September 3, at 10 a.m.
