(via Aziz Yakubu) Blackwell-Tapia
Conference
The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics is pleased to host the
Blackwell-Tapia and Awards Conference Ceremony on November 14 – 15, 2014
at the UCLA Campus. The conference and prize honors David
Blackwell and Richard Tapia, two distinguished mathematical scientists who have
been inspirations to more than a generation of African American, Latino/Latina,
and Native American students and professionals in the mathematical sciences.
The 2014 Blackwell-Tapia Prize will be presented to Jacqueline
M. Hughes-Oliver, Professor of Statistics at North Carolina State University.
Hughes-Oliver has made important contributions in a number of statistical
research areas including methodological research on prediction and
classification, variable and model selection with dimension reduction, design
of experiments, and spatial modeling.
We welcome you attend the conference and encourage those needing
funding to apply on the conference webpage at:

SCHOLARSHIP AND FELLOWSHIP OPPORTUNITIES (from various sources)
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
1.
(via Aziz Yakubu) The Office of Naval Research (ONR) Summer Faculty Research Program
and Sabbatical Leave Program
The
ONR Summer Faculty Research Program and Sabbatical Leave Program are accepting
applications for 2015. ONR sponsors the Summer Faculty Research Program and the
Sabbatical Leave Program for U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents who
hold teaching or research appointments at U.S. colleges and universities. These
programs provide an opportunity for faculty members to participate in research
of mutual interest to the faculty member and professional peers at U.S. Navy
Laboratories. The Summer Faculty Research Program awards qualified faculty from
Majority and Minority Serving Institutions (MIs) - (HBCUs, TCUs, HSIs) -
the opportunity to conduct research for 10-weeks at one of 20 participating ONR
facilities. Travel, housing and a competitive stipend are provided for
awardees.
The
application deadline is December 6, 2014 for the 2015 award year. For
more information visit http://onroutreach-summer-faculty-research-sabbatical.com.
Should you have any questions, please contact Clarence T. Brown at 256-468-6590
or cbrown@tmtgroupinc.com.
2. (via
Aziz Yakubu) Rockefeller University Fellowship
The
Center for Studies in Physics and Biology, at The Rockefeller
University, expects to have a small number of postdoctoral fellowships
available for appointments in September 2015. We are seeking theoretical
physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists with a demonstrable interest
in the interface between their discipline and biology. The Fellows are to be at
that stage of career as to function as independent members of the Center, free
to work alone or in collaboration with any members of The Rockefeller
University faculty.
Applicants
should send curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation and research
statement in pdf format to Melanie J. Lee

Biology, Rockefeller University, 1230 York Avenue,
New York, NY 10065-6399.
3. DOE Summer Internship
Programs
The Office of Science / Office of Workforce Development for Teachers
and Scientists (WDTS) is pleased to announce that it is accepting applications to
its 2015 Summer Term internship/fellowship programs. These programs, which
offer opportunities for direct engagement in scientific research and technology
featuring specialized instrumentation; large-scale, multidisciplinary efforts;
and/or scientific user facilities, are available for undergraduate students
enrolled at community colleges and/or four-year institutions, and for visiting
faculty. Selected students or faculty participate at one of 17 DOE (Energy
Department) Laboratories/Facilities, receive stipends, and may qualify for
travel and housing assistance.
Applications
for these competitive programs must be completed and submitted online by 5:00 PM ET on January 9,
