2. (via Aziz Yakubu) Blackwell-Tapia Conference

The Institute for Pure and Applied Mathematics is pleased to host the Blackwell-Tapia and Awards Conference Ceremony on November 14 – 15, 2014 at the UCLA Campus. The conference and prize honors David Blackwell and Richard Tapia, two distinguished mathematical scientists who have been inspirations to more than a generation of African American, Latino/Latina, and Native American students and professionals in the mathematical sciences.

The 2014 Blackwell-Tapia Prize will be presented to Jacqueline M. Hughes-Oliver, Professor of Statistics at North Carolina State University. Hughes-Oliver has made important contributions in a number of statistical research areas including methodological research on prediction and classification, variable and model selection with dimension reduction, design of experiments, and spatial modeling.

We welcome you attend the conference and encourage those needing funding to apply on the conference webpage at:

ANNOUNCEMENTS

—————————————————————————————————————————

1.    Congratulations to Dennis Davenport, Talitha Washington and Daniel Williams for being part of the team that obtained the grant from the CMaPS Program to provide $617,000 in scholarships for undergraduates. Read more

2.   Aziz Yakubu will be a speaker as Howard University hosts a workshop this summer on Management of Natural Resources  Read more

3.   Talitha Washington is part of a team receiving a $2 million grant from NIH and NIA. Atanu Duttaroy, Ph.D., of the College of Arts and Sciences, and Kebreten Manaye, M.D., of the College of Medicine, are the PIs of the project receiving five-year federal grant of nearly $2 million to support the development of Howard UniversityÕs Advancing Diversity in Aging Research (HUADAR) program. The goal of HUADAR is to identify top minority students in medicine, science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (MSTEM) disciplines, familiarize them with aging research and prepare them for graduate studies and professional careers in geriatrics and gerontology through extensive mentoring, scientific training and educational experiences. The grant funds are from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and the National Institute on Aging (NIA). In addition to Duttaroy and Manaye, HUADAR will be supported by the following Howard University faculty: Joanne Allard, Ph. D. (Physiology), Dexter Lee, Ph. D. (Physiology), Sudha Sharma, Ph. D. (Biochemistry), Antonei Csoka, Ph. D. (Anatomy), Elizabeth Bertera, Ph. D. (Social Work), and Talitha Washington, Ph. D. (Mathematics).

1. (via Aziz YakubuThe Office of Naval Research (ONR) Summer Faculty Research Program

and Sabbatical Leave Program

The ONR Summer Faculty Research Program and Sabbatical Leave Program are accepting applications for 2015. ONR sponsors the Summer Faculty Research Program and the Sabbatical Leave Program for U.S. citizens and legal permanent residents who hold teaching or research appointments at U.S. colleges and universities. These programs provide an opportunity for faculty members to participate in research of mutual interest to the faculty member and professional peers at U.S. Navy Laboratories. The Summer Faculty Research Program awards qualified faculty from Majority and Minority Serving Institutions (MIs) -  (HBCUs, TCUs, HSIs) - the opportunity to conduct research for 10-weeks at one of 20 participating ONR facilities. Travel, housing and a competitive stipend are provided for awardees.

The application deadline is December 6, 2014 for the 2015 award year.  For more information visit http://onroutreach-summer-faculty-research-sabbatical.com. Should you have any questions, please contact Clarence T. Brown at 256-468-6590 or cbrown@tmtgroupinc.com.

2. (via Aziz YakubuRockefeller University Fellowship

The Center for Studies in Physics and Biology, at The Rockefeller University, expects to have a small number of postdoctoral fellowships available for appointments in September 2015. We are seeking theoretical physicists, mathematicians and computer scientists with a demonstrable interest in the interface between their discipline and biology. The Fellows are to be at that stage of career as to function as independent members of the Center, free to work alone or in collaboration with any members of The Rockefeller University faculty.

Applicants should send curriculum vitae, three letters of recommendation and research statement in pdf format to Melanie J. Lee at leem@rockefeller.edu by 12/31/2014.
