From the editor

Sometime ago we had a discussion on the effectiveness of our calculus courses in helping students understand the basic concepts of calculus. Although our students know how to differentiate or integrate, most of them do not really understand the derivative or integral.  In the september issue of the Notices of the AMS there is an article titled "Calculus Concept Inventory." Among other things, I thought it was interesting that studies have shown that the effectiveness depends mostly on the teaching methodology and not on the students or instructors. If anyone is interested in working on this please let me know. I think we need to

You can read the entire article at http://www.ams.org/notices/201308/rnoti-p1018.pdf

Also, thanks to everyone who informed me of changes to the mailing list for this newsletter.

From Oak Ridge National Labs

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 15 participating DOE laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

Applications are due by 10/1/2013.
