1. Purdue hiring notice

From: Greg Buzzard

Dear Professor Yakubu,

I'm writing to ask if you'd help in advertising open positions in the math department at Purdue.  We have openings at all levels.  You can find more information at

http://www.math.purdue.edu/jobs/faculty/

2.Support to Attend a Workshop ÒMathematics of Planet Earth: Challenges and OpportunitiesÓ

A workshop ÒMathematics of Planet Earth: Challenges and OpportunitiesÓ will be held at Arizona State University January 7-10, 2014. The workshop aims to expose students and junior researchers to the challenges facing our planet, the role of the mathematical sciences in addressing those challenges, and the opportunities to get involved in the effort. Funds are available to support participants to attend this workshop and to participate in follow-up activities. Workshop speakers include  Carlos Castillo-Chavez, Arizona State University, and Abdul-Aziz Yakubu, Howard University

The workshop will provide introductions to the role of the mathematical sciences in addressing problems of the planet. There will be an introduction to the five major workshop themes of MPE 2013+ through expository lectures and discussions. All participants will be invited to participate in one of the following workshops, which could include the Education for the Planet Earth of Tomorrow.

An application form can be found athttp://dimacs.rutgers.edu/Workshops/MPE2013PreWorkshop/.    It will include both an application to attend and an application for financial support. Review of applications will begin October 1, 2013, and will continue until all slots are filled.

For more information about Challenges and Opportunities workshop as well as the MPE2013+ program, please contact Dr. Eugene Fiorini at mpe2013-plus@dimacs.rutgers.edu.

From the editor

Sometime ago we had a discussion on the effectiveness of our calculus courses in helping students understand the basic concepts of calculus. Although our students know how to differentiate or integrate, most of them do not really understand the derivative or integral.  In the september issue of the Notices of the AMS there is an article titled "Calculus Concept Inventory." Among other things, I thought it was interesting that studies have shown that the effectiveness depends mostly on the teaching methodology and not on the students or instructors. If anyone is interested in working on this please let me know. I think we need to

You can read the entire article at http://www.ams.org/notices/201308/rnoti-p1018.pdf

Also, thanks to everyone who informed me of changes to the mailing list for this newsletter.

From Oak Ridge National Labs

The Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) program encourages undergraduate students to pursue science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) careers by providing research experiences at the Department of Energy (DOE) laboratories. Selected students participate as interns appointed at one of 15 participating DOE laboratories. They perform research, under the guidance of laboratory staff scientists or engineers, on projects supporting the DOE mission.

Applications are due by 10/1/2013.
