Algebra and Combinatorics Seminar
Combinatorics & Algebra Seminar which had been running for a number of years at George Washington University will now be a joint venture between the GW and Howard math departments. The organizers of the seminar are Joel Lewis & Robert Won (GW) and Sam Hopkins & Minh-Tam Trinh (Howard). The talks will take place 4-5pm on Wednesdays, at both GW & Howard depending on the speaker.

Sankar Sitaraman has been talking about the class number formula.
The learning seminar will continue next week (Nov 6).
This year, we’re planning a mix of research talks and group readings/presentations. The learning seminars will be on topics in algebraic number theory, including class numbers, Dirichlet’s unit theorem, local fields, and cyclotomic fields.

The Southeastern Analysis Meeting 42 (SEAM 42) will take place at the University of Richmond from March 13 -15, 2026.

1. Congratulations to Katie Gurski on her selection to the 2026 Class of the AWM Fellows, recognizing her for: "Her exemplary contributions to the field of mathematical biology and indispensable mentorship of the next generations of women mathematicians at all career stages"
2. Tim Myers writes:
(a) “In 2023 I participated in the ADJOINT program at SLMath (previously MSRI) and since have been collaborating in a group with Nsoki Mavinga (from Swarthmore College) and Mubenga Nkashama (from University of Alabama at Birmingham). I am happy to share that our joint paper entitled “Weak Solutions of Nonlinear Elliptic Problems with Growth up to Critical Exponents” has been accepted for publication in the math journal Communications in Contemporary Mathematics.”
(b) “My paper entitled “A Constructive Definition of the Riemann Integral on a Separable Banach Space B and its Relationship to the Lebesgue Integral on B” has been accepted for publication in the peer reviewed proceedings book entitled : 2025 Proceedings of International Conference : Constructive Mathematical Analysis.

Howard University has been selected as one of the target universities for Boeing’s Visiting Professor program. Fellows will spend 3 weeks in June 2026 at Boeing learning about their programs and exchanging ideas. Applications for the 2026 Boeing Visiting Professor Program (VPP) are open now until November 19th, 2025. Intersted persons must write to kimberly.m.stewart2 at boeing.com

1. Teaching with Wikipedia
Wikipedia assignments can be used as a supplement to lectures. The editor (Sankar Sitaraman) has found that students can learn a lot from doing research while updating or creating wikipedia pages. More information at https://wikiedu.org/teach-with-wikipedia/

Apparently many researchers at US institutions are leaving or thinking of leaving due to the federal funding situation. Here is an interview with some of them, including UCLA's Fields medal winning mathematician Terry Tao.
