Algebra and Combinatorics Seminar
Combinatorics & Algebra Seminar which had been running for a number of years at George Washington University will now be a joint venture between the GW and Howard math departments. The organizers of the seminar are Joel Lewis & Robert Won (GW) and Sam Hopkins & Minh-Tam Trinh (Howard). The talks will take place 4-5pm on Wednesdays, at both GW & Howard depending on the speaker.
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
THURSDAYS
Number Theory Seminar
Thursday 2:15pm on zoom.
On Nov 6, Angelica Babei talked about modular forms related to certain recurrence sequences defined by Apery ( He used them to prove irrationality of some values of the Riemann zeta function). On Nov 13, Jordan Hirsh talked about generalization of a theorem of Lucas on binomial coefficients modulo a prime.
This year, we’re planning a mix of research talks and group readings/presentations. The learning seminars will be on topics in algebraic number theory, including class numbers, Dirichlet’s unit theorem, local fields, and cyclotomic fields.
Contact coordinators for zoom link.
Coordinators: Angelica Babei, Daniel Mamo and Sankar Sitaraman

(a) Seminar on Quantitative Reasoning for Data Analysis
Eric Gaze of Bowdoin College
will share insights from creating and teaching Quantitative
Reasoning (QR) courses over the past 25 years. In particular, he will
explore how to use spreadsheets to engage students in QR classes. The
ultimate goal for these courses is to produce quantitatively literate
students capable of actively participating as citizens and workers in
the 21st century.

INTERESTING ARTICLES AND WEBSITES
1. Teaching with Wikipedia
Wikipedia assignments can be used as a supplement to lectures. The editor (Sankar Sitaraman) has found that students can learn a lot from doing research while updating or creating wikipedia pages. More information at https://wikiedu.org/teach-with-wikipedia/
2. Top researchers considering leaving US
Apparently many researchers at US institutions are leaving or thinking of leaving due to the federal funding situation. Here is an interview with some of them, including UCLA's Fields medal winning mathematician Terry Tao.
